The Aria Dreadnought D-30 (often labeled as Matsuoka's ARIA D30) is a highly regarded "Japan Vintage" acoustic guitar handmade by the legendary master luthier Ryoji Matsuoka in the early-to-mid 1970s.
While Ryoji Matsuoka is internationally famous for building world-class classical nylon-string guitars, he built a very limited number of high-quality steel-string dreadnoughts for Shiro Arai's Aria brand strictly between the late 1960s and 1976.
The Design & Heritage
The Aria D-30 was intentionally built as an exact, high-utility replica of a vintage Martin D-28. During this era, Japanese model numbers correlated directly with their retail price in Japanese Yen. The D-30 originally cost 30,000 Yen, making it a highly competitive mid-tier instrument that punchily out-performed its price bracket due to Matsuoka’s rigorous construction techniques.

Because these guitars have aged for around 50 years, the vintage woods have fully dried out and matured. The Aria D-30 delivers a bright, clear, and focused midrange with an exceptionally fast note response. It cuts down on the booming, muddy bass frequencies often found in rosewood guitars, making it highly favored for traditional folk strumming, flatpicking, and clean vocal accompaniment.
Market Availability
Because Matsuoka stopped producing these steel-string acoustics for Aria in 1976 to focus entirely on his own classical workshop, the D-30 is relatively rare today. They occasionally surface on collector platforms and are considered excellent "sleeper" purchases because they deliver vintage Martin dynamics at a highly affordable price tier.
